Abstract

The Chung-Ang University Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) was established in December 1996 as part of a national project to train international manpower. In 1995, the Korean government formulated a five-year project aimed at training international specialists in the nations higher education system. The project called for creating international graduate programs by targeting a small number of universities that would receive large scale financial support over five years. After a highly rigorous and competitive selection process involving all major universities in Korea, Chung-Ang University was chosen on the basis of excellence in faculty, history and reputation, existing expertise and infrastructure for international training, and above all, the high potential of its proposed program to successfully carry out the national mandate for training international manpower. Iner to provide comprehensive training in global aspects of business, trade, and politics, the Chung-Ang GSIS divided its program into four concentrations: International Business and Trade, International Regional Studies, International Cooperation, and Korean Studies. The multidisciplinary approach exposes students to a broad range of global issues and helps them develop critical understanding and analytic skills. The curriculum itself places heavy emphasis on practical training, making liberal use of case studies and simulations. Because the language of instruction is English, students are admitted on the basis of English skills as well as past academic performance.
